Elia Zureik's interest in the state of Qatar and big data is related to his work on surveillance, the Third World and colonialism. Qatar has the highest per capita income approximating $100,000 annually, and is a heavy user of information technology. His presentation deals with developing a research project that examines the use of big data in the private and public sectors in Qatar.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Elia Zureik is Professor Emeritus in Sociology at Queen's University in Canada. He is engaged with research on the Middle East, colonialism and surveillance.
He is the author of Israel's Colonial Project in Palestine: Brutal Pursuit (2015), Palestinian Refugees and the Peace Process (1996) and The Palestinians in Israel: A study in Internal Colonialism (1979). He has also co-edited a number of books including: Surveillance and Control in Israel/Palestine: Population, Territory and Power (2011); Surveillance, Privacy and the Globalization of Personal Data: International Comparisons (2010); Global Surveillance and Policing. Borders, Security and Identity (2005); and Computers, Surveillance and Privacy (1996).
His articles appeared in the International Journal of Middle East Studies, the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, Third World Quarterly, Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Global Dialogue, International Journal of the Sociology of Law, Social Justice, Journal of Refugee Studies, Journal of Palestine Studies, Arab Studies Quarterly, and Dissent, among others. His articles on information technology have appeared in Studies in Political Economy, Industrial Relations, Telecommunications Policy, Communications of the ACM, Contemporary Sociology, and Computers and Society.
