Rafael Barreto de Castro

Rafael Barreto de Castro is a PhD student in Psychosociology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where he is working under the supervision of Professor Rosa Pedro. He graduated with a BA in Psychology (2005), and an MA in Psychosociology (2008) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He is interested in topics of surveillance, government, security and control. For his Master’s thesis he studied a network of urban monitoring in the city of Guarujá (São Paulo / Brazil), which indicated the need for further research. In his doctoral thesis he is conducting a study in the CICC (Integrated Center of Command and Control) – an urban electronic surveillance network to be opened soon in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Hinged to the approach and ideas proposed by the Actor-Network Theory (ANT), the main objective of this research is a socio-technical analysis of the forms of government related to video surveillance dispositifs in action. To improve his work and stimulate the exchange of information, Rafael was at the Surveillance Studies Centre at Queen's University as a visiting research student until September 2012, working under the supervision of Dr. David Murakami Wood.
