Surveillance and Human Rights in Japan
Yasuhiko Tajima, Professor of Media Law, Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan in conversation with Midori Ogasawara, PhD candidate, Sociology, Queen’s University
In January 2016, Japan implemented a new national identification system that collects personal data on each citizen with a unique number. Though this system originally claimed it was for the equal provision of taxes, welfare and pensions, it quickly changed to know and control individual lives under the current right-wing government. It shows not only the “function creep” of digital technologies, but also a totalitarian tendency of identification systems. Yasuhiko Tajima, a leading Japanese law professor and active advocate of freedom of speech, will lead a conversation about the impacts of Japan’s surveillance systems on democracy in the current political climate of security and secrecy.
