A Microsoft ad claims cloud computing “gives me the family nature never could.” Not likely. But the cloud and big data are bringing corporate concentration, environmental erosion, deepening surveillance, threats to knowledge workers, and the growing fetish of digital positivism. Is it time to make the cloud a public utility?
