The Surveillance Studies Summer Seminar provides an intensive, multi-disciplinary learning experience that addresses key issues of surveillance studies in ways that enhance the participants' own research projects, as well as providing a unique national and international networking opportunity.

THE PROGRAMME:

The core of the seminar is group work, each facilitated by a member of seminar faculty. Groups will grapple with key issues in surveillance studies, including issues such as "The researcher as surveillance agent," "Gaining entry into surveillance sites," "Making international comparisons," "Connecting social science with policy and legal fields" and so on. Participants are encouraged to comment, in their statement of interest, on what areas are of particular interest. The rest of the programme is devoted to theoretical, methodological and professional issues, and to open interaction with established scholars in the field. The idea is to "go behind" conference and book performances to discover how and why surveillance researchers do what they do.

There will be no assessed tasks and no credit for enrolling in the seminar, although a letter confirming your completion of the seminar will be provided.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
The Summer Seminar is limited to 30 participants who are PhD candidates, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty. Applicants must submit a 250 word statement of interest, a biography, and pay a $250 CAD deposit with their registration, which will be refunded should the application not be accepted.

FEES AND SUBSIDIES:
The fee for the 2011 SSSS is $700 CAD. Applicants should pursue funding opportunities before submitting their application.

• The Surveillance Studies Centre (SCC) will award up to three Summer Seminar tuition subsidies to non-Queen’s graduate student registrants who can demonstrate financial need. Click here for more information.
• The Surveillance Studies Network Global Scholar Award (SSN) will award up to three bursaries of £500 (500 GBP) each to SSSS participants from less developed or developing countries who are in need of financial assistance. Click here for more information.

ACCOMMODATION:
On-campus accommodation in Queen's University's premium student residence, Leggett Hall, is available to all participants. Accommodation expenses are NOT included in the registration fee. Each unit consists of two single-bed rooms with an attached full bathroom and costs $99 CAD plus 13% HST tax per night. Two occupants may share one unit.

CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY:
Refunds, less a $50 administration fee, will be granted after 25 March 2011. There will be no refunds granted after 22 April 2011, regardless of circumstances. Consult Queen’s Event Services for deadlines regarding accommodation cancellations.

Surveillance Studies Centre (SSC) Subsidy: The Surveillance Studies Centre (SCC) will award up to three Summer Seminar tuition subsidies to non-Queen’s graduate student registrants who can demonstrate financial need. Each subsidy is worth $350 CAD and will be credited to the participant’s Summer Seminar tuition. To apply for an SSC subsidy, please send a covering letter with your SSSS application, along with letters from three other sources demonstrating your inability to secure funding. The deadline to apply for both subsidies is 11 FEBRUARY 2011 (the SSSS application deadline). Applicants will be notified whether they will attain a subsidy by 4 MARCH 2011.

Surveillance Studies Network Global Scholar Award: The Surveillance Studies Network (SSN) will award up to three bursariesof £500 (500 GBP) each for attendees of the Surveillance Studies Summer Seminar (SSSS) from less developed or developing countries, who are in need of financial assistance. The award will first be applied to SSSS fees and any balance will be applied to travel/accomodation expenses.

Rules

1. To be eligible for the SSNGlobal Scholar Award, applicants must:

• be accepted to attend the SSSS in order to claim award;
• be a citizen of a less developed or developing country;
• be able to demonstrate their financial need;
• electronically submit a full CVand letter of application in MS Word-readable format to: David MurakamiWood and KirstieBall by 11 February 2011 (SSSS application due date).

2. Adjudication

• adjudication will be carried out by a sub-committee of 3 members of the SSNBoard appointed for this purpose by Board;
• the judges will meet annually in person or online, and the minutes of their meeting will be available to all members of the SSN, and subject to approval at the following Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the SSN;
• the judges will make their decision within two weeks of applications closing;
• the judges will award up to three awards;
• the judges' decision will be final;
• the judges will not enter into any personal correspondencewith unsuccessful applicants about the award.

3. Award Value and Benefits

• the award value shall be £500 (500 GBP), to be first be applied to SSSS fees and any balance applied to travel/accomodation expenses.;
• the awardeesshall also be given a free membership of the SSN;
• the awardeesshall be entitled to call themselves 'Surveillance Studies Network Global Scholar' for the year in which they are awarded.
